  • Weighted Pushups?

Today a friend told me that since i don't really have access to weights a good exercise i can do at home is weighted pushups. I guess you just stuff a backpack with anything heavy that wont hurt your back, make sure the straps fit tight, and do pushups with it on. Anyone ever tried these or know if they're really more effective than a regular pushup?

Well, when doing a push up youre lifting about 60% of your weight. A push up is the same basic mechanics as a bench press (relate leg press to squat). Weighted push ups ive done is with a plate on my back and a person holding it for support. Its a good workout if you dont have weights. Ive heard people using phone books and ziploc bags filled with water. Just remember to keep your butt up a little bit more so you can balance a bit better.

My honest opinion, do them decline (feet on something high). Really works better and easier for the weights on your back.

For my $.02 try pushing off the ground and clapping with each push up. Alternately you can get two cinder blocks and hop from the ground up to the blocks and back with each rep.

try doing the pushup in a hand stand position, against a wall, or with someone holding you. This way, instead of lifting one/two thirds, your lifting 100%

Decline pushups is like an inclined bench press, it'll work different parts of your chest, although elevating feet WILL still put more weight on your arm that's true.

Clapups are a plyometric pushup great for building explosive power.

The weighted pushup works on the same idea as the bench press...you're just increasing weight for a similar motion.

Depends on what you're trying to do and what you can currently do.
