  • Which strength training exercises do you prefer? Isometric exercises or weights

I studied Shaolin Kung Fu in high school and most recently Wing Chun and have always heard that lifting weights is a bad idea for marital arts.

I'm a huge fan of body weight exercises and isometric exercises for strength training. I recently came across this video combining isometric strength training exercises with "regular" exercises and wanted to see what other martial artists and fighters do for strength training.

Martial. Marital arts are different In any case, lifting weights is only a bad idea for martial artists who are clueless about lifting weights. Lifting weights can improve strength, speed, explosive power, and endurance -- if you can't use those in your martial arts, it's time to switch martial arts. But you need to lift like a fighter.

Isometrics are a fine addition to any strength program. They can be hard on the CNS if you use them badly, just like lifting weights can be counterproductive if you use them badly. Ross Enamait's programs include a section on how to add isometrics for combat sports.

I have to agree. As my sifu once told me when I was taking kung fu, "All things in moderation, anything through time and effort." Combining both types is great if you know how to use them properly and take the time to do so. As a handy bit of info, my new instructor has recently set up a site called www.wikidrills.com. Its a site that people can post and look up different drills and exercises if they need need some help or want to mix up their routine a little.
