All depends on street or sport situations...
Obviously learning grappling will help you in both,,
BUt I think that if you learn how to bite and eyegouge effectively...ground skills go out the window...
how is any grappler gonna reverse me while i am biting a whole in his neck/face/back etc.....

like you said Ryu...you bit the guy and he got off you...

Yeah,,,learn both and thats the best...
but I'd take the biting over the grappling...for street survival...

and yeah....brushing after every meal helps too guys!

How did the biting topic get into this thread anyways?

        Bau,
that might have been the case, but you have to take into consideration that he could have hurt me badly. As a grappler now, if someone tries to bite me, I'll press him down in a pin that stretches his jaw away from his neck, and causes him a hell of a lot of pain...then if I'm angry enough I might just bite back

My old instructor was doing grappling with me and Id watched some of those movies where they guy is getting armbarred and they other guy bites and then its all cool.

So he was teaching me the armbar... I said what if I bite you!

So he said "OK bite me then".

So I opened my mouth and... he armbarred me and leaned back and my elbow ALMOST popped and it hurt like hell.

So. You can bite their leg but i'd rather have a bitten leg than a broken arm.

But that doesnt mean that biting is out, or that it shouldnt be used at any opportunity, its just not enough against somebody who knows their stuff and ground skills are still totally relevant (but not everything as some would believe).

            NO LIMITATION AS LIMITATION

But I have some more thoughts about this:

I dont think pinning is enough. They can still attack you and they wont get too damaged.

If I ever mount somebody Im may armbar, or figure-4, but mostly just do a straight blast which is gonna bust their face apart coz Ive practiced, kinda sitting on top of a bag and I can get probably about 5 or so straight punches per second with pretty decent power and I just wouldnt bother pinning them... I think its better to get the position and then do damage straight away because something like pinning offers them more openings to bite, attack your groin, eyes etc.

You always have to watch out for groin attacks, bites and eye gouges from an opponent because they are the attacks that dont need positioning or balance or power or anything, they are very efficient and dangerous at all times. Why do you think they are outlawed in supposed no rules fights? Because they are the most dangerous and damaging techniques and so they make it unsafe for the competitors.

Its just like Muay Thai, with all these dudes who think for stand up combat, you need to be like a muay thai guy and have these big knees and elbows... but apply a bit of lateral thinking!

Muay Thai started out as free for all bare knuckle fighting with no safety devices or rules. If you look at the history it gives you evidence as to what works. They disallowed groin kicks and strikes, because too many Thai boxers were getting their testacles smashed. They disallowed eye gouges and knee stomping, the two advance weapons in Bruce Lee's fighting system, that is the lead finger jab and the lead shin/knee kick. Because people were getting busted kneecaps and blinded and so these attacks were banned because the fight would be over before it got started because somebody got wounded or crippled and there would be nothing for the spectators to watch. And lastly they made the fighters wear gloves, why? Because too many fighters were dying after their heads took a beating from bare fists. And the fights were stopped when they went to the ground. Why? Because they couldnt fight and use their boxing techniques properly.

I think Bruce Lee had the right ideas about the things that worked best. Eye gouges, groin kicks, groin strikes, knees to the groin (not like those silly knees to the ribs that they use), kicks/stomps to the kneecap and punching to the head! Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do is the only modern freestyle fighting system that has an on guard position that allows you to protect your groin. If I ever have to fight a Muay Thai fighter then I know his groin will be wide open the whole time and thats why Bruce was concerned that the modern fighting systems had decreased groin protection mechanisms to almost nothing.

But it also shows that standup techniques go out the window when the fight goes to ground and taking off the gloves also allows you to train trapping or other open hand techniques.

Just shows how if you do a little research and just look at the way Thai boxers (for example) fight and the nature of their rules, it shows the nature of real (street) fighting and therefore what are the best, most efficient, dangerous and damaging skills and tools to have and use.

You have to view UFC and that sort of stuff in the same light. Somebody interviewed Shamrock about how things changed when they actually put some rules in UFC (I think previously there was NO rules), and he said that before those rules, the number one thing that everybody trained in and tried in fights was groin attacks! Now, just watch for times when one of the fighters could have slapped the other guys groin, or put his fingers into his eyes, or stomped on his kneecap or bitten him badly. Its like some guy is just laying there in side control and the other guy could take a chunk of flesh out of his neck or armpit or ribs or chest with one good bite! There would be no "control" if the other guy was causing you a lot of pain! Im not saying its all worthless but keep it in mind because one day when u are fighting for your life, you are going to want to use whatever keeps you alive and hurts your opponent, whether its grappling or kicking or striking or whatever, which is the whole reason we train in martial arts.

I say bring it all back to "no limitation as limitation". Dont limit urself to being a grappler or standup fighter or whatever... train anything that works if you are serious about wanting to save your life or somebody else's life one day.

              Monkey,
              of course.

I used pinning just as an example of being on the ground in dominant position. (I also have pins that will tie you up, imobilize you, and make you cry uncle, trust me. ...well not "you" as in YOU, you know what I mean.)

Definately depending on the fight you may need to up the intensity. I am a judoka, and a BJJ guy with an old phase 1 instructorship from Voo himself. However, I have been in fights where all I had to do was pin a guy, and imobilize him. He couldn't do anything to me...if I had pummeled his face...that would be against my "code" LOL

                ;-)

Yep my JKD instructor gets annoyed with me because he just gets a nice position on me (when we are grappling) and I just about tap out because I can hardly breath or whatever, its just so uncomfortable and it just takes all the fight out of you, especially when he has me mounted and gets his 'hooks in' and does that grapevine thing, it just makes me tap out even though it doesnt really damage me.
And if Im being troublesome while Im in his guard he just squeezes his legs and its enough for me to tap out. He says I have to keep fighting and dont give up to early because I may be fighting for my life. Which is true but Im fairly new to grappling and its a lot to get used to.

So of course it would be silly and ignorant to say that ground skills and grappling skills ever go out the window. Its something you really need to experience even though it looks messy if you are a kung fu guy or something, you really have to feel the pressure of somebody who really knows how to grapple (which I cant, yet) to appreciate how they can make your life hell.
