  • Just got in a fight

Well guys I got into a street fight that lasted about 4 minutes, the guy had good base and i couldnt get a good position on him. Got him in my guard as he was trying to choke me, which gave me time to set up a triangle, which I did, but he slipped out of it, then back into my guard and he stood up, went for a sweep but couldt get it. both went back to our feet and it ended a draw.
One thing its alot different fighting and doing the BJJ when your worried about getting punched in the face especially if your on your back and hes in your guard. Things are happening fast. I havent been training much lately and my stamina sucked. Well at least his choke was a joke, having trained in BJJ I knew there was no wayin hell that could tap me out, I got out of iteasy.

No drugs, my mistake was being a nice guy and just going for chokes so as not to hurt the guy, I could have gotten a kimura with easy, guess I should have

Why is it that BJJ/MT guys get in fights so much? Maybe because its taught as a sport, where you "kick ass," and all these guys want to be taught and kick ass, JUST LIKE TITO ORTIZ.

This most likely doesn't aply to you, I kinda get a picture of what your like from your posting, but this is an issue that plagues me and that I plan on writing about.

Anywho, yeah bottom gaurd has a disadvantage when striking is involved, and its even rougher when its self-defence because gauging attacks and attacks to the groin are clearly with the man on top. However, in the average "beef" fight, hair grabbing, finger breaking, groin attacks, ect... are really looked down uppon. People might call such a person a "bitch" for doing such techniques because they aren't really necissary in a beef fight, because it will have a winner and a looser, and then be broken up, like an MMA fight. Anyways, yeah it must be hard down there, though I imagine if I was surpirised and taken down, I might pull gaurd as well.

At least nobody was harmed, but like bbbb said, drop some details!

Talk about stereotypes.. Most of the forum is BJJ/MT guys, what the hell do you expect? If this was a forum full of Kung fu people and some of them get into streetfights you would probably say the same. Stop talking out of your ass.

Well if theres anything to be learned from my post its this guys:
When I had the triangle I hesitated for less than a second before locking it tight.........in that less than a second the guy instictivrly pulled back and out of it. Thats it, the fraction of second in locking the move cost me the move., I see Black Belts lock moves really really quick once they get them, when you train, train hard, you nevet know when its going to be for real. If you lackluster train, the art might let you down

Indeed. Thats what seperates white belts from blue belts and blue belts from purple blets etc... excluding the extra moves they know. I noticed this when I tried to put someone in an armbar, although it looks easy, you need to do it fast, same goes for chokes etc.
              What belt are you OmaPlata?

On the street you REALLY don't want to be on the bottom, but I'm sure you're aware of that. Even if you had locked on the triangle this guy seems game enough that he may have slammed you based on instinct.

I think most people who train BJJ like myself should do at least a little full contact sparring with no-gi to get used to the feeling of panic that occurs when someone is on top of you, in guard, and is allowed to strike. You quickly learn how crucial It is that you tie up his arms and throw on submissions FAST.

Could be just the late spree of fights i hear my fellow BJJ guys talk about getting into, from my school and from another school in Mass. Its just annoying me.

I still have no idea how the fight started, and many other details bbbb inquired about.

This is true no doubt, you dont want to be on the bottom, but pulling guard as we fell kinda akwardly is all I could do. Plus I was already burnt out and tired before I got into it.
I could have armbarred or kimured the guy, but then I am comitted to breaking the arm or shoulder if I do that, since the guy was choking me while in my guard (you guys know this is basically impossible to pull of for him) and not hailing down punches (which I was kinda waiting for) I figured I would go for a choke and put the guy to sleep. HAd he punched my when he had the opening, I would have shown no mercy. With his hand on my throat, I had time to set up the triangle and decide what else to do, since his arm was occupied. I could have grabbed it so easily and arm barred it., he gave it to me like a dummy, just like we're trained 100's to practice against.
                        Oh well thats that.
another thing I noticed is his shirt got totally ripped off, guess i was grabbing for the Gi , lol

nobody around, not life threatening. We knew each other thats all, but never faught and he knew my ground game and didnt want to go down no matter what.
im a blue belt, though havent trained in months on end and it cost me

You should've OmaPlata'd him (Id assume you know how to do it!) as
                              a sweep.

Will you be practicing more takedowns now that you had such trouble
getting him down? How are your takedowns btw?
