What is the difference between a traditional martial artist and a mixed martial artist? To me, mixed martial arts is just afew traditional martial arts mixed together.Tell me a martial art that is contemporary and I will tell you that the art is just several traditional arts pasted together and modified. To me, traditional arts are usually specialists ie boxer is a striker is a striking specialist, wing chun is a speed specialist etc. where as mixed are like your general practitioners, jack of all trades.

yep here we go again...in the CMA threads this time....The little sport players whined when pointed out they arent prepared for the streets...it makes them feel "uncool" when you point out that a double leg takedown on a guy with a knife is suicide. In fact it bothered them SO much they want a self defense for the street forum!! Thats so they can discuss their sport without realities of the street like weapons, multiple opponents and oh yeah the street itself...

I'm not sure who "The little sport players" you refer to are, but maybe you could put them with the little 'self defense' fellas who need help picking up a bag of groceries, have never struck another human being in anger in their lives, and have never actually done any of the techniques they are most confident about, but are just sure that they would be human killing machines on 'da street' and let them all have at it once and for all.

I will grant that a college wrestler is beter prepared for the street than a pure Taiji guy jubaji....now are you gonna admit a firearm trained, fma trained taiji guy is better for the street than your college wrestler?

Thats easy, todays "fighters" have cool shirts, funny hair colors and cuts and lots of rules and refs to make sure they are the best streetfighters in the history of the world. They practice submitting each other one on one in padded rings without weapons...and KNOW it prepares them for armed multiple opponents who dont train sports with rules

there have been some VERY enlightening MMA thoughts on self defense on this forum...when confronted with a knife...run get in your car and run over the attacker ....and the ever important dont punch out car windows in a road rage while wearing ring gear...

No doubt sport fighters make the best fair fighters on the planet... however the streets aint fair...i can be oblivous to the rules of the ring without endangering my life...you cant say the same about the street.

its funny how long this little tiff has been going on....are you old enough to remember the Southwest open Judo contest that happened in Albuququeque New mexico? It seems a wrestling team had the same attitude you do...to say they had their asses kicked is being very polite...they all lost ....horribly
